It gets to me too, Jung.  When I learned it as a ten-year-old in my grade school music class I couldn’t relate to the lyrics at all, but of course now it’s a testimonial to the power of music to send you back in time.

Jung, you just reminded me of this classic movie scene:

Agreed; this is a really fascinating topic that I had never considered before.  I found this brief article on the subject, written by a professor of psycholinguistics:

Just a few nights ago I dreamed that I was conversing with Mona and Lisa in my living room, and they were both speaking perfect American English.  (A cozy dream for me; a nightmare for Howard!)

Howard, don’t forget what Lisa did to Mona at the end of the Maxwell’s Silver Hammer video.  She clearly has rage issues.

Well, Jacki, I thought I was a big Mamas & Papas fan, but you’ve really got me beat in the depth department.  I have CD’s by the Journeymen, the Big Three, and the Mugwumps, but that’s about it for the relatively obscure stuff.

I also recently found this wonderful collaboration on YouTube:

You’re right, Jung.  I knew she looked familiar somehow.  She could definitely turn the world on with her smile.

A couple of bits of trivia about this song from Wikipedia:

It won the 1963 Grammy Award for best rock-and-roll record.  (I find that incomprehensible!)

The band Deep Purple took their name from this song.  The original version, a piano composition from the 1930’s, was the favorite song of Ritchie Blackmore’s grandmother.

This version of the song is notable for April Stevens’ speaking the lyrics in a low and sweet voice during the second half of the song while her brother sings. According to the Billboard Book of Number One Hits by Fred Bronson, when the duo first recorded the song as a demo, Tempo forgot the words, and Stevens spoke the lyrics to the song to remind him. The record’s producers thought Stevens’ spoken interludes were “cute” and should be included on the finished product, but according to Stevens, her brother was not as easily convinced: “He didn’t want anyone talking while he was singing!”

I wasn’t aware of that Cass/CSN collaboration, Jacki.  I guess someone needs to go back and write another verse to Creeque Alley.

There’s also the song “Deep Purple”, which I’d love to see MLT take a crack at.  It would give Mona a great opportunity to exercise her harmonica.

    Hi, Michael.

Someone actually asked MLT a few months ago about covering that song.  This is what Mona said at the time:

“We still have a very long list of songs we’d like to give a go one day, and a lot of (to us) influential bands that we’d love to pay homage to by playing one of their tunes. And of course, there are still 300+ more Beatles songs … 300+ more of our favourite songs
“Suite: Judy Blue Eyes” has been on that list for a long time by the way – we love that song. It’s really tempting to have a go at some CSN one day – those harmonies are to die for! If only there were 8, no better 9, 10, 11 days a week”

Wow, Jacki, it’s amazing how you can just take a batch of word dough and pop it in the mental microwave and produce a tasty poem so quickly!

Okay, new plan:  Jung and I will tug electronically on the wishbone shown below, and we’ll both wish for Jacki to bake enough cookies for EVERYONE next time!

Yum!  Thanks, Jacki.  I’m calling dibs on the one on the left.
