Happy Thanksgiving to Jacki, Jung, and all other MLTers in the Great White North!
David Letterman used to do a recurring bit around every holiday with Paul Shaffer, his Canadian band leader, based on the difference between the U.S. and Canadian Thanksgivings. It would typically go something like this:
Dave: “Happy Mother’s Day, everyone! Paul, do they celebrate Mother’s Day in Canada?”
Paul: “Yes, but they have it in April, because of the earlier harvest.”

Great video, Tomas! And great poem, Jacki! Happy birthday to all!

I can’t hold back on this anymore:

I’d like to see one of those “Elders React to the Beatles” segments done with people in their 80’s and 90’s who have still never heard their music. That would truly be fascinating, and it won’t be possible for a whole lot longer.

Speaking of Matthew Broderick, how about War Games? That one had a big influence on me. And of course, no list of brat pack movies would be complete without Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Speaking even more of Matthew Broderick, he appeared in a cameo role on Saturday Night Live the other night.

I was just a kid in the seventies, but one of my favorite “adult” songs at the time was actually a commercial jingle for an insurance company. Don’t laugh until you’ve heard it; I think it still holds up.
This video is a compilation of numerous commercials, but I’ve tried to cue it up to the right spot. In case that didn’t work, it starts at the 6:30 mark.

Just a few years ago I found out that this jingle was composed by the guy who went on to write Debby Boone’s hit “You Light Up My Life”, which I also loved.

You’re welcome, Jung!
As I recall, the end zones are really deep, and the offense has only three downs per series instead of four. I learned a lot during the NFL strike of 1982, when one of the U.S. TV networks filled the gap by showing CFL games for several weeks.

Yes, that’s a fragment of it. I’m sorry you can’t view the whole thing, but you get the gist of it.
It keeps going on like that until Dylan says something that the host doesn’t understand, so he calls in Tom Petty to translate. Then Dylan and Petty nasal-mumble back and forth (with subtitles) until they finally break out into a duet of “Free Falling”.

Absolutely, Howard! This song has always been intertwined in my head with “A World Without Love”, so I keep forgetting that they haven’t already recorded it.
I presume that it was retitled for Australian release as “A Winter Song”.
Dick Clark appears to be losing it there at the end!

I just checked a Wikipedia article that shows eleven Grass Roots singles reaching the top 100 in Australia, but only Midnight Confessions (#18) and Bella Linda (#35) made the top 50. The numbers are from the Kent Music Report, which you’re in a much better position to assess than I am.

Which one was their Australian hit, Howard?
The Grass Roots were one of three opening acts, along with Herman’s Hermits and Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, in the first rock-and-roll concert I ever saw in person. The featured group was The Monkees, during their MTV-fueled 1986 tour.

“It’s your head; you get to think.” That little kid is wise beyond his years.

This is amazing, Howard! I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this song, considering how high it charted.

I recall sneezing on multiple occasions in the seventies, and yet it never impeded my ability to find doors. I guess I was too young to understand.
