I saw John Sebastian perform in a small theater in the 90’s. I had a front-row seat, so I got to enjoy a lot of eye contact. I kept thinking, “This guy is so nice, I just want to invite him over to my house for dinner!” That’s a very rare vibe.

Well, you can certainly tell I’m not a musician. I read the title of this post, and the only possible answer I could think of was “all six of them”.

Very insightful analysis, Jung! I think you could also compare the structure and feel to a lot of the hits of The Turtles.

I was a kid in the 70’s, and I didn’t like disco music, so my choices weren’t exactly chart toppers.
My first album purchase was by mail order from a TV commercial. It was “The Music of America”, a collection of about 30 historical songs sung by a choir, celebrating the U.S. bicentennial in 1976. They were grouped by category: patriotic, spiritual, war, regional, Stephen Foster, etc. Nothing special, but I was impressed by the bridges they wrote to connect groups of songs into medleys.
About a year later I bought an album at Kmart called “Fonzie’s Favorites”, which consisted of various hits (the original recordings, actually) from the late 50’s and early 60’s, with a big picture of the Fonz on the cover. Unfortunately they added some schlock such as a Fonzie theme song, and a so-called “impressionist track” where someone who sounded nothing like the Fonz kept repeating his catch phrases so that you could… fool your friends, maybe?
And that was it for me until I discovered the 60’s in the 80’s.

To this list I’d add Mona laying out the trail of dog biscuits in “Won’t You Listen Now”, and the very end of “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” where Lisa bops Mona on the head and genuinely appears to worry that she hit her too hard.

Impressive! Perhaps this site should have a tab just for creative contributions, apart from general discussion.

Wonderful! I hope you’re not following my recipe, though. I only threw in the peas for the sake of a rhyme.

No, I’ve never done Facebook. MLT Club is actually my first-ever foray into the world of Internet chat. Up to now I’ve just been a consumer.

I think we’re about the same age, Jacki. WBK was my second-favorite TV show, after Happy Days. I knew Sebastian wrote the theme song because it was mentioned in the credits, but it was another ten years before I learned that he sang it too. People forget that an extended version of that song was a top-selling single in the U.S.
When I was at the concert I tried requesting the song telepathically, but apparently he didn’t hear me. He was backed by a jug band, so it probably wouldn’t have sounded right anyway.

Wow, Jacki, I don’t know what to say. No one to my knowledge has ever written poetry about me. I am very honored. Thank you!

Thank you, Jacki, et al. I really lucked out on this one, in that a lot of the phrases were so phonetically similar to the originals that they just wrote themselves. But I’m feeling creatively spent right now, so I’ll happily pass the baton to you.
A blog might not be a bad idea; thanks for the suggestion. I’ve long had a vague dream that someday I would develop some musical talent and make a CD, but the days are dwindling now, as is my potential for learning new tricks.

Ha! Also avoid “We’re Moving On” and “If You Go Away”.

Thank you, Jacki! MLT has been such a creative inspiration to me that I actually found myself composing the refrain of another parody while I was putting the finishing touches on this one, so it looks like I’m not quite done yet.
Absolutely you should write down your parodies, both to share with the world (or at least a friendly subset thereof), and because there’s nowhere else to look up the words if you eventually start forgetting them.

Nice to make your acquaintance! I’m in High Point, only about an hour away from you. Good to know there are other Tarheels with musical taste.

Thanks, Jacki. I’ve written about 30 parodies, but none MLT-related, so they wouldn’t be appropriate here.
However, I have an idea for a parody of an MLT song that I’ll certainly post here if it pans out.
