My little bit of MLT joy yesterday came within the new duo session. As they sing “I wish I could find a good book,” Lisa rocks left and right in time with the music, which was a trademark Melanie move. A deliberate homage, perhaps? Or did she just “feel it”?

On the topic of silence between songs, Michael Nesmith did an interesting interstitial thing on one of his solo albums. The first song is about yearning to fly down to Rio de Janeiro. It ends with some indistinct party conversation, which is overcome by whooshing wind sounds for about 30 seconds. Then the whooshing changes into the putt-putt-putt of a motorboat for another 20 seconds, to which is then added some guitar licks and finally the opening lyric of the second song: “Motor yacht pulses in the Casablanca moonlight.” To me it suggests being transported in style from one exotic location to another.

Averaged over the last four days, for If You Raise Your Head, V = 714 and C = 2.15.

Super tribute poem, Jung! And I see you worked in a nice Beach Boys reference toward the end.

Speaking of drums and drummers, Karen Carpenter passed away 40 years ago today. Here’s a brand new article about her drumming legacy:

Sheila E., Cindy Blackman Santana on the late Karen Carpenter’s oft-forgotten legacy: ‘Her drumming was not given more attention — the attention it deserved’ (yahoo.com)

Ah, my scant clues were enough for you to track down the album. Great detective work, Jung!

Another great feature of Any Other Day is the rhythm and rhyme scheme of the lyrics. Even without the music to back it up, the structure of the phrasing alone carries the heartbeat of the song.

That’s awesome, Jacki! My grandfather died of heart failure in 2020 at the age of 105, but he also was very sharp right up until the end. Conversations with him were so amazing. I hope your great-aunt remains in good health and reaches supercentenarian status (110 years).

I found and watched that very interview just a few hours before you posted it, Juergen. I’ve never seen anyone over the age of 100 who was so completely vibrant and lucid! And yes, it’s jaw-dropping to hear her casually mention her professional interactions with pre-WWII entertainers.

I just looked up some biographical info on Viola Smith, and found that she lived nearly to the age of 108! She died in 2020.

I never knew that there were all-female bands performing swing music back in the day. Fascinating! And it sounds every bit as good.

What is that instrument being featured around 1:10? It sounds like a clarinet, but it’s much smaller.

Wow! “Our first contestants tonight come from California State College at Long Beach. They’re the Dick Carpenter Trio.” I had no idea that there was any footage of the Carpenters from that early in their career. Nice find, Juergen!

For what it’s worth, one night about a week ago I dreamed that I was watching a piano duet of Any Other Day being performed by Richard Carpenter and Vanessa Carlton.

Don’t forget about Blue Man Group! This is the first routine I ever saw them do, about 30 years ago, and I still haven’t been able to get it out of my mind:

Fascinating stuff, Juergen! Thanks for posting this. But yeah, the big question is WHY we’ve evolved to enjoy music. The speaker mentioned some other things that we intrinsically enjoy in terms of their having a survival advantage, and pretty much everything else we enjoy is based on individual preferences that we’ve deliberately cultivated over the course of our lives. But even a baby enjoys music. Why?

    Hey, Tobi!

I use an Excel spreadsheet to record the current total number of views for each video once a month. Then within the spreadsheet I can calculate everything else. Once you know the number of views per day, it’s easy to estimate when any given total will be reached.

For new releases I take data once a day for about ten days, and just do those calculations on a calculator.

But yeah, I am doing a lot of “artificial” views to collect the data. Each one lasts just a couple of seconds, long enough for me to get the number, so those may not count as views in the YouTube algorithm.
