We sang a version of this song in my grade school music class, but I think the Weavers did a little better job with it:

Better late than never! I just remembered this great vocal example from The Electric Company:

Sort of a mixed bag this month: about half of these videos are up in viewership, and about half are down. But the newest ones are doing quite well so far!

I’m so glad that MLT decided to post the Neve video on YouTube! It will allow casual fans of their music to see what wonderful caring people they really are.
How will a slice-of-life video fare relative to the music videos? Well, the C value should remain pretty high for quite a while because the video is so long, but I’m thinking the V value will drop rather quickly because of the general repetitive appeal of music relative to most other things. But we’ll see!
For the last hour of August 28th, V = 10536 and C = 129. For August 29th, V = 8290 and C = 101. For August 30th, V = 2101 and C = 25.7. For August 31st, V = 1161 and C = 14.2.

While visiting the campus of the University of Wisconsin over twenty years ago, I encountered a flute band from the Peruvian Andes performing out in the open in an area with heavy pedestrian traffic. The sound was mesmerizing, and I watched till the end of the show. They mostly played versions of well-known songs like Simon and Garfunkel’s “Sound of Silence” and ABBA’s “Fernando”, and they were just spot-on. Like Juergen I bought a copy of the CD they were selling on-site, and I listened to it often thereafter. But of course, the recorded sound quality can’t match what you hear when you’re there in person.

Hey, David Y. The raw data in my spreadsheet consist of the duration of each video and the total number of views of each video, sampled about once per month over the past year. My primary goal was to track the evolution of C for each video, but I’m open to suggestions as to other things I could look at.

Averaged over the last eight days, for Vincent, V = 1492 and C = 4.42, and for Here Comes the Sun, V = 1686 and C = 4.10. These numbers are virtually unchanged from a week ago, indicating both songs may be plateauing at a level exceeded only by Please Mr. Postman / Wipeout. We’ll see in next week’s monthly report!

It’s fascinating how often many of us, including me, use the word “joy” in connection with MLT. Until I discovered them, joy was a term with no practical utility that I only invoked on Christmas cards. But no word better describes the feeling I get from them in every manner in which they communicate with us. It’s just complete bliss and comfort, and a sense that there is something pure and honest and good in the world. I’ve internalized it to the point that I don’t mention it often, but I am truly a happier person since joining the MLT journey.

Jung, I had exactly that same reaction to my first airplane flight (also at age 21)!

For me, nothing can compare to the first time I saw the ocean when I was 21. (My parents didn’t like to travel!) Having grown up in a region of rolling hills, I was amazed by the absolutely flat horizon stretching nearly halfway around me, and the inconceivable amount of water separating me from it. And there was the profound realization that I was standing exactly at the boundary between the big blue area and the big green area that you see on views of the Earth from space.
-
Oops, missed this one: Nowhere Man is about to hit 800,000 views, right on schedule.

Jung, my daughter mentioned the first Starbucks, but I’m not a coffee drinker so it didn’t really interest me.
I used to live in southeastern Kentucky, not far from the very first KFC. It’s actually a modern KFC built onto the side of the Colonel’s original pre-franchise restaurant, and it has a little museum devoted to the history of the man and the mission. Not bad for an area of the country that doesn’t get a lot of tourists.
-
Jung, I went to Pike Place Market with my daughter when I visited her a couple of months ago. (We did all the touristy things.) I didn’t see or hear the piano guy, but I got to experience the fish toss and the gum wall. Both very cool!
