Yes, Jung, it’s odd. I’ve lived in several regions of the U.S., and in all of them the school year has started in August. And yet the national media and advertisers always consider the day after Labor Day (during the first week of September) to be back-to-school time, so there must be some parts of the country where that’s the case. I hope folks, Americans in particular, will weigh in on that in this thread: when does school start where you live?
Glad to see that Canada had the sense to create an August holiday! I’d settle for just relocating one of the established minor ones that has no intrinsic connection to any particular time of the year. I’m tired of looking at those blank August calendar pages, containing no notice of anything to look forward to. And I’m certainly not going to go to the trouble of dreaming up my own motivations to make it through the month!

For me, both as a student and as a teacher, mid to late August has been back-to-school time. (Fall semester begins on the 15th this year!) So the first part of the month, both then and now, is when I take care of all the stuff that I soon just won’t have time for, whether it’s things I want to do or things I just have to do.
It’s always bothered me that there are no August holidays, at least on the U.S. calendar. Every other month has something, so why not August, when it’s prime time for outdoor activities and travel?

Here are the milestone predictions for the next month or so:
Paint it Black: 600,000 views on August 13th
Twist and Shout: 900,000 views on August 15th
These Boots Are Made for Walking: 400,000 views on August 26th
We’re also coming up on the first video of an original MLT song to reach half a million YouTube views: That’s Life should get there around September 19th.

Here are the top-20 lists for July. All data are averaged over the period from July 3rd through August 1st, except for Here Comes the Sun, which is measured over just the last six days.
Vincent is only four days old and still screaming, so we’ll leave it in the cry room for now and let it play with the older kids next month. You can keep track of its short-term evolution in other recent posts on this thread.

As you can see, almost every video listed here experienced an increase in views — on average by 11% — this past month! And Here Comes the Sun is dominating despite being nearly a month old, so it may give PMP a run for its money as the long-term champ. Stay tuned!

Thank you, Jung. I do the monthly calculations for all of the YouTube videos (149 of them now!). If anyone ever wants to know the recent viewership history of any videos beyond the top twenty, just ask!
-
Thanks, Jeffery. The monthly summary takes about two hours to generate, but otherwise it’s not really a huge time sink. Just a matter of remembering to check the numbers at certain times and do a couple of quick calculations.
My original intent was to explore how the viewing rates evolve over time. After over a year of taking data I think that’s pretty much been answered, and I don’t know where else to go with the project. (I’m open to suggestions!) But as long as there’s still some interest in the stats, I’ll keep on keeping on.

Hey, not fair! I go out of town for two days without internet access, and MLT posts a new video that I can’t take first-day data on. I thought I’d be safe if I was back before Sunday. Oh well, we’ll just have a delayed start on this one.
For the last hour of July 30th, the numbers for Vincent are V = 18024 and C = 53.4. For July 31st, V = 20539 and C = 60.9. For August 1st, V = 24296 and C = 72.0. (Up, up and away!) For August 2nd, V = 16462 and C = 48.8. For August 3rd, V = 10994 and C = 32.6.

Over the past week, Here Comes the Sun has averaged V = 3117 and C = 7.58.

Over the past week, Here Comes the Sun has averaged V = 4554 and C = 11.1. Still holding steady!

It’s Alright isn’t one of the most frequently discussed Orange songs, but the lyrics are a powerful statement about the importance of following your own path in life despite pressure to conform, and that’s a message we need to hear more.
I also enjoy picturing my old high school English teacher cringing at the spelling of the title!

I remember the side-by-side comparisons of the first Hubble images (after installation of the corrective optics package) with the best ground-based images of the same targets, and was blown away by the massive improvement in resolution.
With that in mind, I was initially underwhelmed by the JWST / Hubble “deep field” comparison: it didn’t seem all that much better. Then I realized that JWST acquired that image in a matter of hours, whereas Hubble’s image was the result of weeks of integration time.
So JWST will be able to image lots of regions of the sky with the same quality as the most extreme Hubble views, and to reserve its longest exposures to bring out interesting details on objects that only show up as faint smudges in those shorter exposures. It should be a fascinating journey!

Right on, Jung! When We’re Together is a terrific opener for that album; it really invites you enthusiastically into their musical world. And every time it comes up on the surprise jukebox, I relax and smile for a few seconds.
I’ve said this before, but if Mona and Lisa had their own TV sitcom, When We’re Together should be the theme song.
-
Thanks, Nicholas. I’ve read that YouTube provides detailed analytics to uploaders about how their videos are faring, so I’m sure Mona and Lisa have a much better idea about their viewing history than I can provide. But they probably would have to come to this thread for a tally of simultaneous views. If that metric interests them, I’m thrilled to be the source of it.

I think I first learned the lesson of It’s Alright from Mr. Rogers when I was very young. He ended each show by saying, “You always make each day a special day. And you know how? By just your being you. There’s only one person in the whole world exactly like you. And that’s you yourself, and I like you.”
