I’m only seeming to come up with things from my childhood, but I guess that makes sense because your threshold of fear is lower as a kid. Here’s one from the Electric Company (twice in a row for some reason):

This is the nightmare-inducing theme song from a Saturday morning TV show I watched when I was a little kid:

For the last hour of October 11th, for the We’re Going Live announcement video, V = 5832 and C = 20.9. I imagine this one will have a pretty short shelf life, though.

  • I agree with Tim: it’s very hard to pick an absolute favorite. Part of the problem for me is that if I choose one that many others consider to be among their best, I don’t know whether I independently love it too, or if I’m just yielding to peer pressure. Here’s one that I’ve genuinely enjoyed since I first heard it but that doesn’t get a lot of attention, so I guess I’ll call it my favorite. I love the chord progressions!

I posted this video a couple of years ago, but we’ve gained some new faces since then:

When I’m down I generally prefer quiet introspection to music. The most beautiful and moving songs to me are actually the sad ones with soul-searching lyrics about dealing with a hopeless situation. Some of them always make me tear up and want to reach out and give the singer a big comforting hug. Examples include Patches (Dickey Lee), Seasons in the Sun (Terry Jacks), and The Winner Takes it All (ABBA).

Neat, Tim! My brother and his daughter met Butch Patrick a few years ago at a comic con. He signed her box of Lidsville DVD’s, and seemed happy to be recognized for a role besides Eddie Munster. Oh, and in between the Munsters and Lidsville he starred in the Christmas episode of the Monkees.

I enjoyed the Munsters and the Addams Family too, Tim. I guess the laugh track kept the viewing experience “safe”.

There were some things about Captain Kangaroo that really disturbed me. For example, what was the source of those ping pong balls that Mr. Moose always mentally summoned to fall on the Captain’s head? And that big black circle beneath Dancing Bear’s eyes: was that supposed to be a nose, or a mouth frozen in a perpetual expression of horror?

Fun fact: I don’t know if you noticed it in the credits, but the protagonist on Lidsville was played by Butch Patrick, a.k.a. Eddie Munster.

  • I love that one too, Tim! My favorite cover song from that album.

  • Perhaps this is common knowledge, but I heard that John wasn’t really “trying” to sing it like that. They had been in the studio all day recording vocals, and his voice was just shot.

Wow, JP! I spent all of 1977 in front of a TV set, and I’ve never heard of this show. It must have aired opposite Donny and Marie or something.
