My mom used to warn us that if we didn’t behave, Santa would leave switches in our stockings. We were unfamiliar with the definition of switches as long sticks used to administer spankings, so we thought she meant electrical switches. We all agreed that that would be just about the most disappointing present imaginable, so we behaved anyway.

This song was on a record I had as a kid. It was, and still is, fascinating to me: Jingle Bells with a countermelody sung in French:

My wife is a George Strait fan, and about 15 years ago we went to a concert. The opening acts were Ronnie Milsap (whom frankly I found much more impressive than Strait) and a 15-year-old girl I had never heard of named Taylor Swift.
Swift was up first, but unfortunately we got such a late start that by the time we got there she had already completed her set.

I keep wanting to add Ma Belle Amie, but that belle doesn’t quite ring true.

It would seem there are enough bells out there to build a carillon:

For years I thought this guy was saying “whispering madhouse”:

As a kid during the 70’s energy crisis, when we had to turn the heat way down and wear sweaters indoors all the time, I couldn’t imagine why anyone would have been disappointed to get coal in their stocking.

I didn’t know this until just now, but the guy she’s singing to is actually named Billy, and they were actually married. So we can also put this one on the list of self-referential songs.

Joe, I don’t know if I found the same version of Along Comes Mary as you did, but yes, impressive! Their sound is so tight that I never pictured them coming out of the studio to do concerts.
