  • For the year I was born: “Too Young” by Nat King Cole, but I like the one for the month I was born which was “How High the Moon” by Les Paul and Mary Ford.

Same for Graduation; “Sugar Sugar” by the Archies was for the year, but the one for the month I graduated was much better: “Get Back” by the Beatles w/ Billy Preston.

I cannot stand “The Little Drummer Boy”. If it comes on the radio, it’s off to another station or just turned off.

If I had to pick a Beatles tune to put on my least liked list it would be “Yesterday” – something about it just annoys me to no end.

One of these days I should write this list down since it seems to always get asked and the only 3 that are fixed positions are the top 3…

    1) Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield

    2) Simon and Garfunkel, Wednesday Morning 3AM

    3) Beatles, Rubber Soul

    4) Jimmy Hendrix, Electric Ladyland

    5) Led Zeppelin, Led Zeppelin

    6) Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Will the Circle Be Unbroken

    6) Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon

    7) Moody Blues, In Search of the Lost Chord,

    8) James Taylor, James Taylor

    9) Carly Simon, No Secrets

    10) Neil Young, Live Rust

  • This one is early ’80s but I think it’s one of the strongest antiwar songs ever. I’ve posted the German (original) version because it’s a much stronger statement than the English version.

I’ve played through them a couple times, nice and clean with good output for the watts. I just never liked them enough to get one. I’m a Vox and Fender guy mostly. Go to guitars right now are an American Deluxe Tele and a Casino modded with a B7.

5/5 on the first, 4/5 on the second, 3/5 on the last. The 0.5 second clips are insane, most of it was a guess for those.

My favorite from Pet Sounds was “Caroline No”

For me it would have to be Neil Young’s “Thrasher” – his breakup song about leaving CSNY. Gorgeous 12 string work from Neil and the lyrics out Dylan Dylan. The whole “Rust Never Sleeps” never really gets the credit it deserves, but unless you’re a Neil Young aficionado, “Thrasher” is a lost classic.

I got them all except (of all the ones to miss) “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” But, I do infrequently play bass so I sort of knew them already. As for Paul’s bass playing, remember he played guitar before he ever played so once he got more comfortable with the bass, he got more creative.

Interesting that this came up now since we just saw this at the Museum of Fine Arts here in Houston:

Nearly everybody “borrows” riffs, although Chuck Berry seems to be a favorite target. The Beach Boys ripped off Chuck Berry a couple of times. Even Bob Dylan ripped off Chuck Berry. , Paul says he’s taken stuff from classical composers too. Led Zepplin is notorious for rip offs. The Doors had to pay royalties to the Kinks because “Hello I Love You” is a ripoff of “All Day and All of the Night.” In a really extreme case John Fogerty got sued by a publisher for ripping off a CCR tune. Add to that the fact that there are only 12 notes in the chromatic scale and unless you’re playing jazz you generally don’t use all of them in the same tune, which further enhances the possibility of copying, although tempos can do a lot to change things around.

I agree about “Hallelujah” and what really irks me about it is that it gets played as a Christmas or religious song and when you really listen to it, it’s a breakup song about a failed relationship. Great idea for a song to sing at Christmas!

Michael Kamen had his own group in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s – “The New York Rock and Roll Ensemble”. Not that well known but they had some really interesting stuff. No violins, but the cello was featured as was the oboe. I ran sound board and lighting for them for a few shows in 1971 which is how I know about them. I think I still have a couple of live R2R tapes taken off the board someplace around here. Anyhow, this is them with Michael singing:

Not a fan really. My first thought when I hear them (even “live”) is always “I wonder what they really sound like under all that autotune?”
