Hi Roger, well here are my pride and joy instruments, but I have to admit I’m no musician yet, but I plan on changing that with piano lessons and dedication to music which is my dream.
Here is my Baldwin baby upright I bought brand new back in 1994/95 during the height of my 2 years music passion and piano lessons. I got to the point of being able to play a simplified version of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata by memory for a piano competition. Well it was me, a grown adult competing with 10 and 12 years olds. 🙂 Things happened and life got in the way and I unfortunately did not continue my piano, and always regret that and think what if I continued.
The piano is back at my parents old place in the basement which use to be my bedroom. My mom always liked having the piano in the house, and would often come down and play on it when I was out, although she didn’t really know piano. So the piano kind of became part of the house, and when I left, it just didn’t feel right taking it, so it’s been there now for some 25 years. My sister lives in the house now, so I can still see it. Maybe one day I will bring it to my place when I can play well enough to make it worthwhile.

Like I said the lyrics to “Run for your life” is morbid and offensive to some. There is a huge mural near where I work in an area of town called Gastown. It’s a huge picture of a 70s riot. It’s a violent scene, but from the artists perspective it’s a vivid expression of an event of perhaps what he or she saw and felt at the time. One can pass judgement on it for its appropriateness in a public place,, but nevertheless it is quite impactful. Perhaps John or George was having a particularly frustrating time when this song was written, and this is how they expressed it in art form.

Poems awesome Jacki! I think a well deserved honor for Roger.

That’s an interesting explanation of Norwegian Wood Howard, thanks for sharing it. The lyrics at the end, “..I lit a fire, isn’t it good, Norwegian Wood” makes more sense with that explanation. That’s is art, taking a real life circumstance, positive or negative, and expressing it in a an emotional way either beautifully as the case with this song, or vividly to make a profound statement.
The last song on Rubber Soul, “Run for your life” sounds really catchy with great guitar sounds, Beatles genius at work, but the lyrics are quite morbid. Same principle at play here I think.

I like that deep purple vibe Jacki. Fittingly psychedelic as OUAT.

Yeah Howard, I’d love to see Lisa smoke her Gretsch on that song. Those riffs on “And Your Bird Can Sing” are just waiting to be devoured by Mona and Lisa.

This is such a charming video and what delightful singing. I also really enjoy listening to the extensive series of interviews they did with Billy Butler every weekend for many weekends in 2014, and all the live singing they did on the shows. Many real gems like this one.

I think this day calls for some:

John, well said. MLT are just getting better indeed. If you haven’t seen their cooking show, it’s definitely a must watch. You can catch it in the Advent Calendar 2018 in the TidBits section at the very bottom. The month of December 2018 was very special with all the special things MLT did with the Advent Calendar, making last Christmas that much more special.

Yes, here, here on this very special day!!!

Niiice Roger. Really enjoyed looking at all your guitars (and yours too Mike). That Gretsch certainly looks familiar with that signature Gretsch label on the white plate. All those videos with Lisa and her pride and joy Gretsch. That’s gonna be awesome when you do all the customizations on it to get it perfectly to your liking. It must have been quite joyful (guitar heaven)when you took that brand new guitar around the block the first time!
BTW I will post a picture of my Baldwin soon as I can, but it’s at my parents old house. It kind of became a fixture of the house and didn’t seem right to remove it when I left.

Wow Howard, thanks for that epic insight. I guess I often mistake the guitar sound to the harpsichord and Sitar. 🙂
I agree, I think Mona and Lisa would be awesome with the Sitar one day.

Lanzarote: To rise like a phoenix from the ashes
Looking at all the beautiful and breathtaking scenery and unique volcanic landscape of Lanzarote, it reminded me of the phrase, “To rise like a phoenix from the ashes”, and a story about someone who’s house burned down one day. He lost everything and was devastated. Literally out of the ashes he rebuilt his house, and he realized it turned into an opportunity to unburden himself from all the baggage from the past that was holding him back. He rebuilt a better house, with much improved design and ergonomics than the old house. It was better. From the ashes rose his Phoenix.
As the story goes from Greek mythology, the phoenix is a mythical bird with fiery plumage that lives up to 100 years. Near the end of its life, it settles in to its nest of twigs which then burns ferociously, reducing bird and nest to ashes. And from those ashes, a fledgling phoenix rises – renewed and reborn.
I did a google search of this phrase, and found the following definition: “To rise like a phoenix from the ashes means to emerge from a catastrophe stronger, smarter and more powerful. An example of rising like a phoenix from the ashes is someone who opens a new, successful business after his previous business has failed. Another example is someone who builds a new house after his previous house has been destroyed in a fire.”
“When your world comes crashing down, you have a chance to do something you couldn’t have done before: rise up.” Aufstehen! I love the MLT cover of that song on their 2007 Concert album too. What a coincidence.
Anyway, just a little inspiration from the many Lanzarote photos here and the magnificent Once Upon a Time Video with Lanazarote scenery as a backdrop.

Did the Beatles use a good dose of Automatic Double tracking on their awesome “Norwegian Woods” too? I hear the wonderful twangy jingly sounds. I love this song, and I think some of the nicest Beatles psychedelic guitar sounds, maybe on par with “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. I wouldn’t be surprised if Norwegian Woods is one of the songs on Rubber Soul album that had the biggest impact on Brian Wilson, a real ground breaking sound at the time, and the beautiful harmony

That’s the video that started it all for me in March 2017.
