    Hi Jurgen

That is a hilarious video! I think the answer to why is not something that can be expressed in words, but in music, painting, and literature, in art. It’s just like I don’t think words can adequately explain “love” completely either. I like Bertrand Russell’s idea that the hunger for why, that curious and inquisitive mind some how makes the world more interesting and full of awe and wonder lurking under the surface, and maybe takes you closer to the truth.

I’ve heard about Stephen Hawkings and been meaning to watch a movie about him on Netflix, and not familiar with Douglas Adams, will check him out on Wikipedia. Thanks for mentioning them.

This all reminds me of the the X-Files, “the truth is out there”.

Hi Bill, Mona, Lisa, and Rudolf demonstrate their amazing song writing and musicianship talent in the album WHY?, eclipsing some of the finest legendary song writers and musicians of the 60s and 70s. They can create music with amazing complexity and depth that I feel in a Beethoven symphony. Add to it Mona and Lisa’s incomparable vocals and harmonies, and it is stuff of the legends, pure magic.

    Niiiice Sara!

Receiving MLT merchandise is always a precious and special experience with the little extra touch they put into it. I always feel the love and passion for their music and craft in everything they do. It’s very special.

Hi Jurgen, that is amazing. I wonder how long it took them to set all that up and fine tune everything til it sounded just right. The miniature world itself is quite impressive taking the trains 6 minutes to complete the course with other trains and planes moving around.

David, Jurgen, Daryl, Tom…some really thought provoking discussion about music and trends, love it!

Jurgen, to your point about music must appeal to the feelings, absolutely. Interestingly Beethoven was all about enlightenment, freedom, and individuality against the establishment of emperors, and his music was all about that like his Symphony No 3 dedicated to Napoleon, until he turned out to be a tyrant as well. It’s amazing how he could express those feelings and ideas with just instruments. MLTs Jump Ship with it’s instrumentation alone does all that expressing such a mysterious and concerning mood of the times. WHY? is such an emotional ride with the instrumentation alone like a Beethoven Symphony, all so incredibly moving.

While there definitely is great independent artists today as you point out, the popular mainstream top chart music today lacks the ability move you. The top hits today certainly did not do anything for Rick Beato who certainly has a wide taste and appreciation for a broad range of music, old and new.

Late 70s and 80s was my growing up age culture, and I like the music of that time too. Rock Me Amadeus, Rapture! Oh yeah.

    Hi Sara, nice topic.

I never truly appreciated the Beatles with the justice they deserved until I discovered MLT and joined the MLT Club, learned so much.

Just off the top of my head, the Beatles Got To Get You Into My Life, with the brass section, it started a whole genre with the likes of Chicago, Little River Band….etc Then there is Helter Skelter, arguably the first heavy metal song, that triggered a whole hard rock heavy metal genre like Led Zeppelin to AC/DC to many others. Beatles later works like Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Let It Be, Penny Lane, Here Comes The Sun and many others…lead the way for Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Supertramp and pretty much every great rock band that came after the Beatles.

The Beatles influence on music is profound. They are one of the great pillars of music in the caliber of Bach and Beethoven. Music changed forever after the Beatles. Their influence on music is as profound as Bach and Beethoven. You could say they are the pillar of modern music.

Howard Goodall’s awesome Beatles documentary is a must see for a true appreciation of the Beatles and why they are so great. He illustrates how the Beatles is one of the great pillars of music of the 20th Century just like Bach and Beethoven were in their respective centuries.

While the Beatles influenced MLT too musically, I think the biggest influence and inspiration Mona and Lisa took from the Beatles is their artistic philosophy of never repeating themselves creatively, and always pushing the innovative creative bubble. The Beatles music progressed immensely in their middle and late period starting with Rubber Soul, and MLT are doing exactly that too, focusing in the studio and creating innovative cutting edge new music, like their latest WHY? album. In the studio with Mona, Lisa, and Papa Rudi, I see parallels to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Martin writing music, singing, arranging, mixing tracks, experimenting with instrumentation and sounds….creating amazing music. Immensely impressed and proud of MLTs unwavering artistic philosophy.

Hi David, I’m really glad I was able to come across Bertrand Russell, who happens to be your hero too. I always found philosophy a fascinating field and one I’d like to make some more time to read up on, including Bertrand Russell. My wife was reading Bertrand Russell’s book “The Problems With Philosophy” the other day and when she explained the book to me, the concept of asking why as being the foundation of philosophy really resonated with me in light of MLT’s WHY? and found it really fascinating. Marcus Aurelius is another philosopher I learned about a little I found fascinating around stoicism and fate and resiliency, and Plato too and some others around the Enlightenment like Kant, Descartes. That’s really cool you have a Bertrand Russell book signed by him, that is very precious. Thanks for sharing more insight about Bertrand Russell. It’s amazing his ideals had an impact on the Beatles activism on world peace and love, especially John Lennon. That 2nd video about his message to the future generations is really moving and impactful. I can see how Bertrand Russell resonated with Paul and John in songs like All You Need Is Love, Give Peace A Chance, Imagine etc…

Daryl, I miss my 6 CD changer with 6 surround sound speakers in my old Mustang! Now I use the bluetooth to connect my phone jukebox to the car stereo, that’s the only stereo option I got when I got my new Kia. It was, what? Where is my CD player as I drove off the lot. Now I have to pull over every time I want to change albums, though I am sure there are more sophisticated ways of setting up playlists with a bluetooth MP3 player. I just much preferred the simplicity of loading my 6 CD albums into the car stereo before embarking on my trip, and switching between albums on the fly at the touch of my finger tips.

I remember I was all smiles ear to ear when I first saw MLT’s Mr Postman/Wipe Out video! Wow, that was incredible seeing Mona and Lisa doing those surfing guitar sounds. I love the California sounds of Destination Sunrise. I just want to have that blaring through the speakers while driving down the California coast!

Jacki, it’s wonderful having older siblings with a nice record collection. I certainly benefited from that which influenced and enriched my music exposure early on.

JP, so your first album was ACDC Back in Black, nice. I think had several ACDC albums in cassettes when I really got into them in the mid 80s, mostly the early stuff when Bon Scott was the lead singer.

Len, that’s pretty interesting about the number of tracks on albums, UK (14 tracks) vs USA (10 tracks), and Canada doing a happy median at 12 tracks. You would think that should be up to the artist to dictate as it should be instead of the record companies. That doesn’t matter as much when an album is just a collection of songs, but when thematic and concepts albums are involved that matters. I don’t think Pet Sounds and Sargent Peppers have a different UK versus USA version albums fortunately. There is only one version as far as I know. The Beach Boys Today is an awesome album (their new mature and more sophisticated music direction), my fave of theirs second to Pet Sounds.

Hi David, thanks for posting this interesting video. Yeah, I agree with you, and what Rick and his guest said, there is just nothing there in those top hit songs. There is nothing to draw you back for another listen. I hear no musicianship, hardly any real guitar work at all, and the singing is mostly auto-tuned. It’s just a bunch of musical effects stitched together, formulaic techno pop, regurgitated. There is just no skill or musical talent that went into it, except for some clever mixing of tracks. Throughout the entire video, all I kept thinking is Rick should hear MLT’s WHY?.

Hi Len, thanks for watching the video and providing your feedback on it. I think the video really highlights the incredible song writing genius of the group, and looks under the hood of their music, getting down into the structure, theory, and mechanics of their music and how really innovative it is, even though most of the brilliant song writing would have most likely been intuitive as John, Paul, George, and Ringo did not have any music theory training nor knew how to read or write sheet music. The video really articulates how amazing the Beatles music is and the mark the Beatles made in music, and really makes you appreciate the song writing talent of the FAB4 or as you point out the FAB5. It seems George Martin from his classical music knowledge and training saw the natural intuitive musical genius of the group in John, Paul, George and Ringo, and channeled it, providing his input to the band. I saw in some interview where John had an idea of how he wanted the song to sound, and George understood the music theory that John was talking about and showed John how to structure the notes. George knew how to take what John or Paul wanted to do musically, and express it properly in notation. This was important when they involved other musicians in some of their very complex music like A Day In The Life. As you point out, the band had an incredible synergy, and their talents together was greater than the sum of their parts. Together they achieved much more than what they could individually I think.
