My favourite Motown song is Locomotion, and Grand Funk Railroad covered a wild rock version of it, and love their live performance of it that I think is hard to beat.

A big stand out live performance I watched I won’t forget is the 4th of July 1980 Beach Boys concert in front of nearly half a million people in front of the Washington Monument. It was right in the middle of the hostage crisis in Iran, and there was a lot of patriotism in the air on that 4th of July, and the Beach Boys were perfection to bring the country together. Something the USA needed to celebrate freedom and joy in a tough period.

This was before internet and youtube, so to see a full live concert like this played on TV was an amazing moment. I was thrilled was to put it mildly.

A decade later at work a good friend of mine to this day, talked about how he came upon a Beach Boys concert in Washington DC while he was doing a year long road trip through the USA, and it turned out he was at that concert. What a small world.

I’ve been to 4 of their concerts and they put on an incredible Fun, Fun, Fun show, from the moment they come on stage to the 3 or 4 encores at the end, it is absolutely delirious.

I mentioned this one before but have to include it here. The MLT song that made me cry, in fact the only song I can remember that made me break down and cry. The heartstring pulling longing in the song is so powerful, and Lisa and Mona sing it with so much feeling, every guitar note tugs at the heartstrings too. It’s beauty made me feel so good, it consoles and soothes the soul.

If scholars discovered a new never heard before Beethoven Symphony No 10, 200 years later, it would set the classical music world on fire and make music history. This is what is happening now in the rock/pop world with Now and Then. The Beatles “Now and Then” is a landmark music history making moment, and I’m so glad MLT is part of that moment creating a stellar superlative version of their own, honouring the Beatles.

I always enjoy David Bennett’s perspective on music, and he offers another interesting one on “Now and Then”.

    Hi Tim

Yeah I remember that, and it was the Interior Secretary who said that, and even President Ronald Reagan and the First Lady Nancy chimed in saying they liked the Beach Boys, and the 4th of July concert with the Beach Boys went on. That may have been a subsequent 4th of July concert the year after, but I think the biggest American Rock Band was the most fitting to do that show. The whole band was there including all 3 Wilson brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis. It was their biggest concert they ever did.

Welcome back David. This is a calming and soothing song. I like the music box effect with a clock or metronome in the background. It’s an introspective song, beautiful.

Wow Tim, “Sylvia’s Mother” is so touching and moving. I’ve never heard this one. I can feel that gut wrenching pull of it. I’ve heard of Dr Hook, they had a number of big hits I recall. When You’re In Love with A Beautiful Woman, Sharing the Night Together, Only Sixteen….

The Rolling Stones had some great melancholic ballads like Wild Horses, Angie, and this one:

    Hi Tim

Yeah, “Alone” is so tender and beautiful, it is the highlight of the new Duo Sessions II album for me, but not to lessen any of the other beautiful gems on the album. The song just underscores the amazing song writing prowess of Mona and Lisa.

Thanks for sharing about your friend, that is sad to hear. Perhaps your enduring kind thoughts and regard for her would make her happy knowing that where she is. With sad songs, it’s a mysterious thing, in the darkness it evokes an amazing beauty that give hope and insight, and healing.

I’ve posted this one before, but it’s one of the most consoling songs out there.

Sometimes just knowing you are not alone, and others have felt the pain or anguish you are feeling is amazingly consoling. When I discovered MLTs “The Wide, Wide Land” after losing my mom to dementia the year before, the song was so beautiful and moving, and knowing that beauty was being expressed by artists who went through what I went through was amazingly consoling, knowing I was not alone with the pain I was feeling.

    Hi Daryl

Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny) is so heartwarming and what a great tribute to John Lennon. The lyrics “I’ve been knocking but no one answers” really express the feeling of loss. Elton John is the king of ballads, and back in the 70s I recall his music was everywhere, so many beautiful melodies. He was like a Mozart, and for a while was cranking out the hits like the Beatles did. In my early teens had a good friend who really loved Elton John and so got to listen to a lot of Elton John albums he bought. Songs like Daniel were so sad but beautiful. Even his love songs had a melancholic feel that could reach deep inside and move you and make you teary eyed. He certainly had a magic with his songs like this one. He had great rockers too.

Hi David, thanks yeah that was a great one by Abba, a huge hit for them. I also liked their “Fernando” which has a very longing feel to it. I think that is another aspect of sad songs, there is a strong longing, like longing for a time from the past, or someone you are missing that can be so powerful and shake your foundations.

    Hi Maureen

Great to hear from you! If you want to create your own post/thread in the forum, from the General Discussion main page, just click on the orange “New Discussion” button on the top right hand corner. Would be awesome if you post something. 🙂

As for downloading the song “Now and Then” from the MLT Club, if that is what you mean, it is not available to download yet. When MLT adds the song to the “Additional Recordings” Jukebox, then it will be available to download, through the “Download All Albums” button, and navigating down to the Additional Recordings “Download Songs” button. When you click the button, it will immediately download to your “Downloads” folder in your PC as a Zip file that you can extract by clicking on the zip file.

As for how soon “Now and Then” will be posted in the Additional Recordings Jukebox and available for download, I am not sure. Hopefully soon. The Duo Sessions songs become available when they do a new Duo Sessions album that contains the song.

I hope that answered your question.

Daryl, I presume you are referring to a Youtube paid membership and downloading songs from there?

    Hi Tim

Thanks for the video. Wow, what an interesting story Brian Setzer has with this beloved guitar he got when he was 17, and pretty much stayed with him through his entire career to now. All the customizations he did, monopoly dice knobs, stickers, repairing the neck after it came off, having it stolen and then getting it back…. Musicians certainly get attached to their guitar and often have the same one their entire career. A similar story with Randy Bachman and his first Gretsch that got stolen and he got it back decades later. George Harrison with his first Gretsch guitar that stayed with him throughout his career. They are very special instruments.

    Hi Steve

I was certainly pleasantly surprised to see this video posted out of the blue on Youtube, wasn’t expecting it. I also noticed a lot of covers of this song on youtube by a lot of artists, and I think it is a good idea for MLT to pre-empt the music landscape with their own amazing cover to ride the wave created by the first new Beatles song in decades. I think there is a timing aspect to this as a lot of artists are covering it, and MLT getting their superlative version out as quickly as possible is the right thing to to. We all want to see MLT grow their fan base big time, and this is a great opportunity to get their sound out there when ears are wide open for this amazing song. Every great version in addition to the Beatles original is welcome. So I understand MLT being more spontaneous with this one to get their take on this song out ASAP, and forgoing the usual process of posting at the MLT Club first. Given how polished and refined their cover and video is, they must have got very little sleep to do this one over the last 1 week. Kudos Mona and Lisa, and Papa Rudi and Michaela! Amazing job well done. 👍
