Yep, it really did !!!
as i was born in 57, the 70’s were my most proactive years, at 14yrs i left school and started work, this gave me a new found freedom of : 1) having my own money, 2) being my own keeper ( no more “time for bed – school tomorrow”) , 3) my own front door key ( the best ever) .
Working for my uncle i started as a printing apprentice, but the bonus was he was also a weekend Dj, so for most weekends I was with him at pubs, clubs and private party’s, grooving to all the crazy sounds of the 70’s but also being educated on a whole variety of music and getting into he tech side of music and sound systems.
My Uncle was in his mid 20’s so he was a child of the 50/60’s with knowledge of all the early greats and a fantastic record collection.
He also had the fortune of growing up with some of Birmingham’s (UK) early greats, he and his brother were schoolmates of Roy Wood, The Move & Wizard, and Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath. so when we wasn’t working or DJing we would go to ropey old pubs where these great would be playing live to an audience of only a few, mingling after with a few beers and messy jokes.
The bands and music were basic, they were just finding their way but the atmosphere and excitement was electric, even then they had a charisma and appeal that was to grow them into the greats they became.
Birmingham in the 70’s was as ignited as Liverpool was in the 60’s with pubs and clubs awash, the majority of the better venues were based around the old city centre area, Broad St and “The Jewellery Quarter” only 5 mins from the town centre and an old 1930’s housing area converted to small workshops and businesses.
On Broad St, we had “Barbarella’s” and ” The Rum Runner” home to many local and visiting bands, in the “Jewellery Quarter” we had “The Cedar Club” another top venue for all and many.
Some of the Bands/Artists I’ve had the privilege and pleasure to see live before they were famous were:
Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Duran Duran, Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart, Denny Lane (Paul McCartney – Wings), Stevie Winwood, The Commodores, The Drifters, Gladys Knight and the Pips, Slade, and many more.
Yes the 70’s were real and it happen’d in Birmingham !!!!

Hiya people
seems that there has been a few OZI track put forward during this conversation, so going off piste a little I thought I’d share my own contribution, recorded in 1965 by the local TV presenter turned pop star, Ernie became Australia’s version of Bruce Forsythe and made this a Number 1, for 16 weeks ! it knocked Elvis of the top spot.
The song “Think About Me” was written, composed and arranged by my dad Colin Kirby, hence the love of sixties era and tunes.
Sadly he’s now passed on but as his oldest son I have full copyright of this song and many others just shouting out to be recreated.
what do you guys think ??

Hiya everyone,
wow, didnt know that I was going to stir up a hornets nest !!
the reality is that the twins are busy making new music and hopefully ready to release it soon, once released it comes down to the hard work of promoting and selling – even music doesn’t grow on trees, so it becomes a relentless battle of time and expense against sales and profit. for the twins to go out on tour and do the rounds of radio/TV promos can be gruelling and although they have a loyal following from those who know them, to piggy back on an artiste like Mike would add an awareness not only to his following but awaken the media circus as well, which in turn should make the promo process a lot more successful.
Musically the twins are superb and have a beautiful sound that i love to hear whilst relaxing or driving, more often that any radio station, however I think the charisma of their live performances are unique and an experience that would embed itself in your mind forever, anyone who has seen then would soon become loyal fans and customers.
Plus on a personal note, I haven’t had the opportunity to see them live yet so if Mikes tour is available i would jump at the chance to see the show.
The varied opinions throughout this discussion just show how subjective music is and that it really does unite the world
peace and love to all

Hiya
returning to the original theme of guitars, I popped into our local music shop having heard they moved to a bigger store – WOW was i suprised !!!
from a small cramped, noisey, no parking space shop a massive leap into the 21st centry, now house on a large retail park with over 2000 car park spaces, thier now housed in a bright, modern 10,000 ft shopping unit, 3 storey and an awesome collection of everything musical – BUT – and this is the best part – same staff, same free drinks and same low costs !!!!
They now boast he largest Guitar wall in Europe !!!! and I can believe it – its a haven for musicians – absolutely brilliant.
hers a few pics – sorry not more but got so goggle eyed forgot to take photos as i browsed amongst the gobsmaking choice and variety.
feast your eyes on these beauties

Hiya Jung,
yep it certainly did, super scary on our small British roads, needed to treat her with respect !! she had a nasty habit of slipping the tail on even the slightest turn and biting you in the bum !! I did many 360’s when i really shouldn’t have.
If we talking the Best of Mustangs it has to be the original 64, drop top in cherry red. Super cool to look at, not the hottest of speedsters and a pig to handle but it was beautiful.
There where many design faults on that first production run for about 3 yrs, purely due to cost savings and some of those never got resolved.
Ford where in a battle with Chevrolet and the Corvette Stingray, a car that was capturing the hearts of the young college teens, Ford wanted that market so designed the Mustang with that aim, they only spent money on the design & looks, much of the chassis, running gear and engines were pretty basic and lifted from other ford models.
There is some where on the internet or cable TV archives a brilliant firm documenting the birth of the Mustang which i remember watching here in the UK when i was about 12, 13 yrs old (Lee Iacocca’s assistant general manager and chief engineer, Donald N. Frey was the head engineer for the Mustang project — supervising the development of the Mustang in a record 18 months from September 1962 to March 1964.[4][5] — while Iacocca (Rock Hudson) himself championed the project as Ford Division general manager. – Brilliant TV series for it’s time and really showed the pressure of the american motor industry and how things got done – think it was this – Wheels (1971) is a novel by Arthur Hailey, concerning the automobile industry and the day-to-day pressures involved in its operation. The plot lines follow many of the topical issues of the day, including race relations, corporate politics, and business ethics. The auto company of the novel is a little-disguised Ford Motor Company and some of the characters are recognisable to company insiders.)
enjoy

Cheers Jung,
glad you liked it
always loved the sound of raunchy hot guitars, favs of the day were Ronnie Wood, “Stay With Me” and Eric Clapton “Layla”
trouble is having tried and tried my mind, fingers and ears dont work together !! so i was crap !!
so i followed my dad and played Harmonica, and by the way Canned heat tunes are some of my favourites to play.
I too miss my “stang” the British version – A Ford Capri, 3.5 lt rs
worked my way up from the humble 1600 cc to the last beauty that was a German import, full rally spec, one of 6 build for Roger Clark the world famous rally driver, found it in a scrap yard and rebuilt it to glorious technicolor and full working order, such a beast with nearly 300bhp, ended up looking like this original, had to sell due to newborns, still sad about it but I did gain 2 lovely daughters so not all bad.
Ford MoCo in Dagenham, Essex bought it as it was a numbered chassis and I think they placed it in their historical collection, never did find out for sure. it could be this one ??

Hiya Howard,
just browsing through and found your comments on MLT cover songs,
you posted a pretty comprehensive list of songs and interesting facts, one being Procul Harlem, the one that caught my attention was the Annie Lenox version, WOOOOW what a tune, i grew up with the Procul Harlem version in the Top Of The Pops days but never really liked it – BUT the Annie Lennox version blew me away – along with the video of the day I think this was a much, Much better version.
To hear Mona & Lisa sing and play on it would be the icing on the cake – I’m sure they would get global recognition for it, i hope they try it some day
Thanks for the info

Hiya Stephen, welcome aboard – we gonna try and make this Orange Revolution happen !!
Jools by the way is Jools Holland – http://www.joolsholland.com/aboutjools.htm
I have a personal connection to Ruby Turner – ( https://youtu.be/N3tHxmATJgE ) who is one of his best friends and collaborating artists, she regularly sings with him and his big band orchestra and she is a regular in and around Birmingham, UK. – I often bump into her when she’s in town, she’s also a close friend of Apache Indian – ( https://www.bbc.co.uk/music/artists/ec03ebc9-33c5-46a0-a071-228cd3dc4498 ) , another Birmingham artist whom I actually work with, so between us we can make this happen.
Once I have the info I need I’ll let everyone know how to get his attention focused on the Twins.

hiya Howard,
Bonza as i used to say when i was younger, putting wheels in motion, I want to see the Twins right up there amongst the greats that have passed through the doors of Jools, he’s a man of great influence and connections.
As for Skippy the kangaroo – not not related but did grow up in Adelaide, South Australia, ans Yes I did have a kangaroo as a pet, we used to rescue and save the young joeys that where found in their mothers pouch if they had been hits by cars and left at the roadside, sort of a foster home thing, if i remember right we had around 12 in total for varying amounts of time, one of the longest was 9 months – he was called Joe ( not very creative i know – but i was only 6ys) I used to take Joe to school on a lead – until he got to adventurous and escaped – sad but i guess he was ready to rejoin the big wide world.
Never did find out what happened to him, I like to think he was ok and created many more offspring to the wild Kangaroo population. – i have an old photo somewhere I’ll scan it and upload when i find it.
