Penny Lane – The Lost Recording – Duo Session

MonaLisa Twins by Penny Lane Sign in Liverpool

Penny Lane Is In My Ears And In My Eyes

And now it can be in your ears, too! At least a version of us singing the song at the age of 15 during our first ever trip to the UK and Liverpool, long before we ever moved here.

Some of the songs we recorded for that trip we have never officially released, like our cover of Strawberry Fields which we posted as an MLT Club exclusive a few months ago. The others, like In My Life and Blackbird made it onto YouTube back in the day, and some of you might have even discovered us through them!

Well, we also recorded “Penny Lane” which never made it on the internet – until now! Have a listen …

LISTEN: Penny Lane (Beatles Cover) – Recorded in 2009

We never got around to put any bass or drums on to the track – just two guitars and two very young sounding ML vocals.

We came up with some extra harmonies though, where there aren’t any on the original. Listening back after all those years we actually quite like them – maybe one day we should re-record it? … Well, maybe after we’ve done all the other 34059745 songs that are still on our list. 😉

Stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa

  1. I made a pilgrimage to Liverpool in 1990. Sent two dozen postcards from Penny Lane.

  2. Your version of Penny Lane is beautiful. I’m pretty sure that’s a 12 string guitar which sounded lovely. If you added the Bass line the song would be more amazing because the bass run Paul played kind of made the song. Still, a fantastic recording!⭐💖

  3. Came here direct from the “I Should Have Known Better” duo link in the latest email. Spouse and I bopped happily through that perfect, crystalline offering and I thought I’d do a little exploring of more duos. Landed here. You two just spark joy. You are sparks of joy…anywho, yes, please do re-record–maybe even start the track with this and fade into the new version. I can see that then-and-now making for a really wonderful video. Don’t know how much American TV you’re familiar with, but this would have been right at home in an episode of Gilmore Girls. Lots of love to you both.

  4. I think that’s wonderful. You nailed it. And I’ve had it looping, so I’ve just heard it 20 (30?) times in a row.

You could make a new version of it, and I know how good you are at doing versions that are better than the original. But this one’s a keeper. Thanks.

  5. Loved this, pure talent waiting to mature, clean crisp and fun, thank you for sharing

  6. Lovely harmonizing and playing here– at 15 years of age! I still have the original 45. “Penny Lane” has a bouncy melodic structure similar to the Sgt. Pepper’s title song in a way. Reminds me of an old witticism: “Essay seems pregnant with meaning, but never quite gives birth” (haha). I’ll look for the vids!

  7. This is just a wonderful version of my favourite Beatles song of all time. I smiled the whole way through listening to it.

  8. A perfectly performed “un-plugged” version of Penny Lane.
I suppose, an early “Concept-of-Function” for later “Duo Sessions” ?

  9. Perfect as is…pure listening joy…every note, harmony and intonation. Sometimes too many tracks serve as distractions that mask real talent, which is on full display her.

  10. Even your version of Penny Lane on 2 guitars is harmonies at its best and sounded really good, I think a studio recording would be something you should do, maybe you can learn the French Horns? Just kidding or at least some session players.
I don’t know maybe just a dream I had! Thank you for all you do! Groovy!!!!

  11. FAB! Please do record it with a full band.

  12. Hi Mona & Lisa, I’ve just listened to your Penny Lane track…brilliant! Re-record it?…All I can say is…Yes…Yes…Yes… Please!! A great tribute to a great song. Andy

  13. Love the harmonies. And your early voices are wonderful. Thank you for linking to this.

  14. I just now realized that I’ve been following you since before you moved to England. I first played your music on my radio show over two years ago. I’d love to see you do a video of this. As long as you’re singing, you have my support on the American airwaves…

  15. “beautiful”. I have been waiting for you to do Penny Lane.
I didn’t know you had already done it. Please don’t leave it to long to record a full version of this.
    I can’t wait! ❤️❤️❤️

  16. This would be awesome with a full band… and some horns too!!! You sounded amazing though 🙂

  17. J’adore….Vous êtes merveilleuses

  18. Yes, make it again with a complete band 😉

  19. my daughter wants to know if you switched shoes for the picture above

  20. Hope you decide to re-record this song

  21. Very, very nicely done!! Beautiful!!

  22. Love it – love the picture as well. Two very cute and pretty young ladies!

  23. This original recording is PERFECT.
No need to do another recording. Just release it as it is with a compilation of stills of the time as the vision.
The youthfullness of your voices makes this recording special.

Include some pics of the day in the clip and release it.

    It is fantastic.

  24. This is just perfect as it is. Just make a video of the two of you singing and playing your acoustic guitars to this version – and you will have another million views on YouTube. You both sound so great on this track from 2009. Please release it so we can add it to our collection. Thanks for sharing your amazing talents with us, Mona & Lisa. You are both so very special.

  25. I think you should definitely revisit this song!

  26. Well girls, what more can be said, I’ve read the other comments and it seems to be a done deal, your original recording at the age of 15 is beautiful as a stamp in time, to be re recorded as an acoustic duo session now would be phenomenal, hopefully you will find time to release this to members and the wider audience on YouTube,I’m sure it would really show off your talents and gain you further exposure, it is one of Sir Pauls favourites, would it be great if HE picked it up ?

  27. Your “Penny Lane” cover is beautiful. “I’m always amazed at how much you were so accomplished and effective, so early in your life.” No need to make a new recording, this version is just perfect.

  28. A Splendid time is Guaranteed for All! once again two angelic voices in perfect harmony. Well done Ladies.

  29. I love it! Even at that young age, you were so professional sounding!

  30. I can’t believe how good you sing!

  31. Mona and Lisa! Any songs that have you two harmonizing are phenomenal! This version doesn’t need anything- it’s sonic fusion!
I think this would be a great song to redo just the two of you with guitars – and your miraculous voices – for a Duo Sessions video.

Also please consider allowing us to buy these versions that you haven’t released – I’m sure many of us would love these in our libraries and the funds would help make new music…
God bless you ladies and your talent!

    1. Frank, I was thinking the same thing. The beauty of your harmonies alone ladies, carry this song just graciously, without the need for anything more. It’s like with Little Drummer Boy, just your miraculous voices and drums was all it needed. Your harmonies are incomparable!

      1. Ladies don’t try to embellish perfection.
        Please leave it alone.

  32. I love this so much! Just like the rest of your “duo sessions” their simplicity showcases your incomparable voices and perfect harmony, along with a very clever and finessed accompaniment. Just divine. Dankeschon!

  33. Beautiful. you should definitely record that one, someday when you can find the time, it`s a perfect song for you. One of my favourite Beatles songs, and one that shows how they made eachother better by competing with eachother

  34. You absolutely should rerecord it!
It is always so much fun going back to your beginnings and hearing your early recordings – so fresh and so happy!
And Mona….the high notes you hit on many of your songs are just incredible! Bravo! 🙂

  35. That is just absolutely wonderful!!!Love your version. You know your harmonies just are magic. When the Beatles version convinces me it can’t sound any better, you ladies come along and rewrite the rules. I can’t believe you kept such a gem under wraps for a decade. What other surprises are lurking in your archives? 🙂 🙂

  36. Beautiful, like Jackie and everybody here, it’s perfect as it is. It captures you at that moment in time. It’s simple, it’s raw, it’s perfect. I wouldn’t add anything. You could make it a video by simply having a montage with pictures of that same trip. Which would leave you to focus on the other 314159265 songs – and some pie!
Thank you for sharing this gem!

  37. As with “God Only Knows,” you reveal so much about this song by stripping away all but what is essential. Beautiful. And at 15!

  38. Great to hear an early recording from a decade ago! Beautiful rendition with superb harmonies. What other hidden gems do you have ?

  39. Well done, I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for “Penny Lane”. I don’t think there’s much room for improvement on the format of guitar and vocals; it sort of makes me think this was how it might have been written. Keeping that, it would be pretty groovy to see how you would approach the song now, with a decade of musical growth applied. Maybe something for a late night session?

  40. It’s a toss up as to whether “Penny Lane” or “We Can Work It Out” holds the top spot as my favorite Beatles song. This was an extremely pleasant surprise to find less then 24 hours into my MLT Club tour. Thanks for posting this.

  41. Another unearthed MLT gem! Love those harmonies! I agree with Richard, your version tells a slightly different story!

  42. Well what a lovely surprise treat this was early Saturday morning. We now have quite a few adorable acoustic version songs from the 15 year old twins.

Definitely no need to re-record. Just add some bass and drums perhaps.

I wonder how many more gems like this there are?

    1. Yep. Solid foundation though I did find myself adding the horn fills in my head. I have to wonder what some do-do-do from the twins in place of the horns would sound like.

  43. That took me back to the 60’s around the time it was recorded. The innocence in your voices tells of the time that most of us were living in. Brilliantly well done.
If you hadn’t told us about the added harmonies I would have never known.
You all should be very proud of a job well done.
Your cover tells the story of Penny Lane differently than the Beatles did. They sound like they are guys telling the story. Where as you both sound like you were her friend (like Leader of the Pack) (song from the 50’s)
    Thanks for sharing Ladies?❤

  44. Wow!! Absolutely brilliant. I loved the cover of Penny Lane, another one of my favorites. The harmonies were spot on, the lead vocals amazing and the alto was beautiful. Great job Mona and Lisa!! What a great way for me to start my weekend. Breathless! Hard to believe you were only fifteen! LOVED IT!!

  45. I don’t believe you would need to “re-record” this song. With the addition of just a few instruments in your modern studio and another superb MLT cover would exist. The vocals are very good and the performance is stellar. Just a little tweaking will make this performance an MLT classic.

  46. Quite Groovy…. Luving your take on this classic… I love the simplicity of your recording of this… Perhaps in the future, a more full bodied version could be recorded but I really loved this, in its simple, raw form… Captures your vocal essences very nicely… Thankyou for sharing this MLTBuzzing Wee Gem… Fab way to embrace a Friday and wknd ahead ?
