Both Sides Now – New Video

Moons and Junes and Ferris Wheels …

We caught the Joni Mitchell bug a few years ago, and her music has been part of our lives’ soundtrack ever since.

When it came to these stripped back “Duo Session” recordings that we do regularly over at the MLT Club we knew we wanted to try some of her material for one of them. It’s hard not to fall in love with this woman, her music and fearless, poetic, honest song-writing. The song and its words speak for themselves ♥

It is also the first time we recorded something with an open guitar tuning, one of Joni’s trademark sounds.

We hope we did the song justice and that you’ll enjoy this little clip, filmed in our Duo Session corner. It is available on our album “The Duo Sessions” on CD or as a download.

Stay groovy,
Mona & Lisa

  1. Beautiful rendition, The mark of true artists is the ability to perform and record without overproduction. These two remarkable young women have that understated beauty combined with winning personalities. Please consider donating to MonaLisaTwins in honor of their birthday, June 16.

  2. Just beautiful! Joni seems kind of forgotten, but she wrote so many wonderful classic songs and stayed true to her music and interests. Hope you do something from Sisotowbell Lane, one of her very early albums, before she was a big star. Love your music!

  3. You two never cease to amaze me…..musical perfection. I am a major fan, and that’s coming from someone that’s played for 60 years. I live near the Gold Coast in Australia but when this Covid 19 restrictions are lifted I hope to come over to see you both.In the meantime just keep doing what you are doing…..wonderful.

  4. How fitting to have you ladies retell this Joni Mitchell classic to a whole new generation. I love this tapestry of words and painted on the canvass of our mind. Thank you for doing it with pear-down version to hear the beauty of simplicity.

  5. Sorry, but this is a disappointing performance. The key should be dropped and you were not true to the actual chords.

    1. “The key should be dropped and you were not true to the actual chords.”???
Who cares, this sounds better, brings this classic back to life.

    2. I think this is a lovely arrangement, of an evergreen, and they have put their own slant on it, and I guess they didn’t want to do an exact copy of the original…in fact, think this is better, because of vocal harmonies

    3. Hi but are covers not down to interpretation, quality vocals, quality playing and arrangement. I would say same high standard as always.

  6. As always, not an insulting copy, two beautiful talented women, I wonder if they understand the impact of the lyrics for when they were written or to them are they just lyrics ?

  7. A wonderful rendition of an old classic. Well done ladies, I enjoyed it immensely.
Any hints as to when we will be seeing the release of a new album of original music?

  8. Oh, lovely girls,

So beautiful performance & the singing of your souls,

Such a pleasure to meet so smart young ladies, to get this pleasure for ages,

    Good luck!

    Stay groovy!

    With love,

  9. Open tunings can be great fun, especially when using a slide. I use them a lot. Joni used them to great effect and now so do you. Take care and stay safe girls.

  10. A beautiful song – one of my favourite Joni songs. Your cover is absolutely fantastic.. Love the harmony. Thank you for yet another brilliant recording.

  11. Your covers and originals are my window to all the music these days I need. The covers, like this Joni Mitchell classic, you add your beauty and character to it, and you bring these old classics to life and do them incomparable justice, and your originals have all the creativity and musical depth of the great song writing legends like the Beatles and Joni Mitchell that is truly lacking in mainstream music today. Orange draws me back again and again like Pet Sounds and Sgt Peppers. “Close To You”, “Sweet Lorraine”, “Count On Me”, “Still A Friend of Mine”, “Club 27” etc, my oh my, inspired song writing indeed. So looking forward to your next original album.

Love your version of Both Sides Now, absolutely beautiful.

  12. Thank you for that (Both Sides Now). I have heard the Joni Mitchell version so many times and for so many years that I guess I stopped hearing it pretty much. Hearing your version made me actually listen to the song once more and hear it for the profound and beautiful song that it is. Thank you.

  13. Well done ladies, great cover performance! Thank you!
Are you also using tunings popular with Joni Mitchell?
We would love to hear you perform “Amelia”!

  14. Once again you very talented young ladies have spirited me back to my youthful music listening days! Wonderful to revisit timeless tunes with your young voices.

  15. You two are just wonderful. Living the dream. As an old guy who has played all kinds of music and seen all kinds of genius musicians, classical, jazz, rock and more I say that you two are the real deal, you have soul. I am going buy your albums today. My favorite of all you do is still This Boy. Once I wrote to you about the overlap in your musical journey and mine, right down to Samba Pa Ti and White Room and I got a nice thoughtful reply back. You wonderful ladies, helping to keep the music of my time alive. I hope that you stay well.

  16. Clean, unadulterated, angelic! This ladies is some of your best work…and it’s all exemplary. I’m an elder American guy dealing with end of life issues. I’m pretty tough and a very positive, Blessed by God’s Grace person. That said I still have ocaissional melencholy. When I watch and listen to you sisters….my Spirit is touched and lifted. You’re a Blessing to nations of people. Thank you with much love..Butch Rose

  17. Wonderful song and really beautifully done. It came out in a very difficult time in my life(1969/70) and still brings me to tears every time I hear it!

  18. Your current cover of “Both Sides Now” is beautiful….the mellow harmonies is just that – beautiful….the soft harmonica (was that your Dad’s idea?) is very sweet…You take a classic song and add your delightful musicality and we have another GEM from you two. All the best. a long time fan…..

  19. This was a very good choice of song, and you both appear to really “get” what the song is about, beyond the mere words on the page, and relating to the meanings shows in your performance. Great arrangement also. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel would be pleased with your harmony style on this one, so pleasing to listen to. “If I Were A Rich Man,…..”(a song from ‘Fiddler On The Roof’), I would not hesitate to help financially. You deserve it. But, alas, I am but a struggling artist like you two, in my little three-piece band. Perhaps we will sell a gazillion copies or downloads of our upcoming album, and if we do, I will share some of my portion with you. For now, I’m just glad that I, and you two ladies, appeared on this earth during the same era of time, if only for a short while, as I am probably the age of your grandfather.

  20. Classic voices, that blend and harmonize so beautifully. The acoustic guitars and pleasant familiar songs reminisce our thoughts and memories together. Beautifully performed.

  21. This is wonderfully done. You capture both Joni’s delicate artistry and strength, all while making the song your own. Thank you for this!

  22. die Stimmen san a Waunsinn!
Ich bin stolz auf diesen Export aus Österreich

  23. I love this song. And a beautiful version. I have the Duo Sessions CD, but nice to see it performed!

  24. Sang this song to sororities in my frat in college. The song was new then (music majors). Hard to believe, but seems you get better with each new release. Keep on trucking.

  25. I’m 61 and have to admit that I never really listened to this song until today. This song is me, in a way I dislike how I feel right now. I don’t know whether to praise you or scold you for that. You two bring out that feeling that this song must convey. You caught me off guard. Few musicians have accomplished that. All said. Take care you two.

  26. Carissime,
Provo anch’io a comporre mie canzoni e recentemente ho pubblicato su Youtube, oppure su Amazon Music e su Spotify i miei tre ultimi CD.
Se avete voglia di ascoltarli li trovate clikkando … GUIDO VIALE IO E PETER PAN
Un grande abbraccio con grande simpatia… from Italy !

  27. Quite brilliant. Love listening to all your works. Sharp, clear words and covers are superb tributes. Also love that era of music. Joni Mitchell would be happily stunned at your rendition of Moons…. I am a big fan. Keep making music x

  28. Bravo, Mona Lisa Twins ! Your covers are still full of joy and genuine emotion. And moreover, they allow us to discover or re-discover great songs. Thank you and may your future be as shinny as your smiles ! ????

  29. As a Canadian of Austrian Heritage I am very proud to say that this was the best performance of this song I have heard ever. One thing that is very difficult to reproduce from Joni Mitchell is the emotion behind her words that give them deep and profound meaning. Mona and Lisa you connected with Joni Mitchell’s emotions and it was a beautiful work of art. Many thanks to you both.

  30. MLT
Nice sound, Both Sides Now, I thing you can make any song you do sound great !
I would love it If you would sing, Be My Baby, by the Ronettes

  31. I thought Judy Collins version was the only one that would move this old hippy to tears, clearly I was wrong, thank you both so so much.

  32. Absolutely beautiful, I always believed Judy Collins version of joni’s beautiful song would be the only one to reduce this old hippy to tears, clearly I was wrong. Again, thank you ladies.

  33. Joni was HUGE,, around Woodstock era. You girls nails it. Be great to hear you cover her song Woodstock. You definitely have the voices to bring that good old song,, back to life. Best of luck,,, hope you make it to New England soon.

  34. Although Both Sides Now is undoubtably Mitchell’s best known song, my favorite is For Free, an underrated homage to street musicians…An awesome cover of this song can be heard by the Byrds which includes a beautiful arrangement with lovely harmonies….

  35. One of my favorite Joni Mitchell songs is “For Free” an underrated homage to street musicians….Check out the Byrds’ version for a lovely arrangement and awesome harmonies…
