All About The All About Falling In Love Video Shoot

“All About Falling In Love” is a somewhat different love song off our debut album When We’re Together. If you don’t know the original video yet, please scroll down to the bottom of the page and watch it first, because this post is all about the creation of that video and the behind-the-scenes stuff.

When we brainstormed ideas for the visuals for “All About Falling In Love” we decided we wanted to use people other than ourselves to be the main focus of the video for once. It was something we had never done before, and with all that video editing we did at the time we got sick of our own faces 😉

Besides, we thought it was much more fitting for the song to detach ourselves from the story. We sort of wanted to act as narrators in the video – the buskers on the side of the street – the same way as we do in the actual song, describing the life of two people.

Two people … which two people? We had to pick our candidates. Who did we think was fitting to fill the roles of the two songs?

Mario Slavik - All About Falling In Love

For the male character we decided to ask our friend Mario. We grew up a village (and 15 minutes on the bike) apart and used to pester him on the school bus during our high school years. We were the sort of kids that would befriend (or … annoy?) anyone on the way to school and talk to whoever would listen (or pretend).

Mario was a few years older, so naturally he attained the “cooler, older guy” status right away. Over the years, however, we actually became good friends and we were delighted and positively surprised when he agreed to try playing a character in one of our music videos.

He had no acting or even music experience in any way, so we had to check if he was going to be any good at it. We invited him over, fed him some biscuits and tea, put a camera up and made him walk around our kitchen while we were shouting instructions like “Look serious!”, “More mysterious, please!”

On behalf of ourselves and the group he passed the audition.

During the same week we also started to look for someone to play the female character and decided to take to the internet for it rather than our circle of friends and acquaintances. We scoured Austrian actor groups and databases and stumbled upon Mona Schramke. That name alone made us click on her profile but her cute curly hair and great look made us contact her – she seemed perfect for the job.

Fast forward a few weeks and we were on our way to downtown Vienna with dad and our friend Arnold who agreed to help us with the filming. In the boot (or trunk) we had: A couple of cameras, a dozen spare batteries, gloves, tripods, lenses, a guitar and … our granny’s wheelchair (more on that in a bit).

We filmed at several locations in Vienna but they were all pretty close to the city centre. For everyone who has ever been to the city we were born in: It is stunning and well worth a visit!

As fate (and tradition) had it we unintentionally picked a very cold day to film but the brisk air and bare trees suited the video perfectly. This time around, the two of us joined the crew, and we together with dad and Arnold did everything from filming, to directing, to feeding everyone snacks to trying to stay warm. And to pushing the wheelchair which we used, not only as a form of transporting our stuff through the city but also as a trolley to stabilise our shots.

Throughout the whole day we were setting up, filming and moving from one location to the next. Filming days can always be long and stressful, and while this one certainly wasn’t an exception, it was still a very pleasant shoot that never reached that critical tipping point of sacrificing quality for limited time.

All was done and dusted within a single day ,with the exception of a few takes of just us which we had filmed a couple of days earlier.

Mona and Mario did an absolutely great job and really captured what we were looking for in the video: from catching pigeons to subtle gestures!

When editing we went for a near black & white look as we thought the meaning of the song didn’t require flashy colours. We wanted to keep it simple like the song itself.

Thanks for reading and watching the making-of video.

Remember, it’s all about falling in love …

I always wondered if the two “actors” ever got together. Became an item for the purposes of the video. Did leave everyone wondering.
